A Hat Full of Sky

Discworld #32
A Hat Full of Sky (2004)

A Hat Full of Sky is the second Tiffany Aching novel, and it follows Tiffany as she begins her apprenticeship in witchcraft. What she finds is not the glamorous version of magic she might have imagined, but hard work, practical responsibility, and the kind of discipline that makes clear how serious witching really is. At the same time, she becomes the target of a dangerous, disembodied creature, turning what should have been a period of learning into a direct test of her judgment and inner strength.

The book has a stronger sense of psychological danger than its bright, funny surface might first suggest. Tiffany remains a clear-headed and grounded central character, but the story pushes her into a more unsettling kind of conflict than the one in The Wee Free Men. Readers can expect a fantasy that is witty, eerie, and deeply character-driven, with the rural Discworld setting, the presence of figures like Granny Weatherwax and Miss Level, and a tone that balances humor with real menace. It works best after The Wee Free Men, but the premise is clear enough to follow on its own.
