Thud!
Discworld #34
Thud! (2005)
Thud! is a Discworld novel centered on Sam Vimes and the City Watch, and it begins with a murder that threatens to ignite an old conflict all over again. In Ankh-Morpork, tensions between dwarfs and trolls are already running high because of the long, bitter legacy of Koom Valley. When a dwarf is killed, Vimes is forced into an investigation that is much larger than a single case, with the risk of street violence and political chaos growing around him. It is the seventh City Watch novel, though its central setup is clear enough to follow on its own.
What readers can expect is one of Pratchett’s stronger blends of detective story, civic satire, and mounting tension. The setting feels crowded, uneasy, and increasingly volatile, while Vimes remains the book’s stubborn moral center as he tries to hold both the case and the city together. There is plenty of humor, but the tone runs darker and more urgent than in some earlier Discworld novels, with questions of prejudice, history, duty, and violence carrying real weight beneath the comedy.
