Interesting Times
Discworld #17
Interesting Times (1994)
Interesting Times is a Discworld novel built around Rincewind, the chronically unwilling wizard who keeps finding himself at the center of events he would much rather avoid. This time he is drawn into turmoil in the Agatean Empire, where political instability and the prospect of war turn him into an improbable figure in a much larger conflict. The premise plays to one of Pratchett’s favorite strengths: taking someone manifestly unsuited to heroism and dropping him into a situation that seems to demand exactly that.
The novel has the comic momentum of the Rincewind books, but it also carries a sharper satirical edge, using revolution, empire, and military ambition as part of the setup. The setting feels broad and unsettled, with danger never far behind the jokes, and the story leans into fast-moving misadventure rather than mystery or quiet character study. It is the fifth Wizards novel within Discworld, though like many Pratchett books it can still be read on its own. Readers can expect an energetic, ironic fantasy that mixes chaos, wit, and a very reluctant central figure trying mostly to stay alive.
