Maskerade

Maskerade is a Discworld novel that brings the witches into the world of opera, performance, and backstage intrigue. The story centers on Agnes Nitt, a young woman from Lancre who goes to Ankh-Morpork hoping to make a career with her voice, only to find herself at the city’s Opera House, where strange events and a series of killings threaten to overwhelm the spectacle onstage. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are drawn into the situation as the line between theatrical illusion and real danger starts to blur.

The novel has the shape of a comic mystery as much as a fantasy, with Pratchett using the heightened setting of the opera to play with identity, appearance, vanity, and performance itself. It is funny, theatrical, and knowingly melodramatic, but there is also a darker thread running through the setup, since the threat behind the scenes is more than just a joke about show business. As part of the Witches strand of Discworld, it fits naturally with those books, though its premise is clear enough to work on its own.
